Litigation funders Virage Capital Management and TRGP Capital invested in hundreds of claims in the case of Johnson & Johnson (J&J) over talc products in exchange for a share of any profits. J&J is now willing to pay $8.9 billion to settle lawsuits.
The involvement of the funders is made public due to the New Jersey court rule requiring the disclosure of certain information about funding sources outside of the. The rule aims to address the rising calls for the regulation of litigation funders. J&J is facing more than 60,000 claims when you take into account federal and state baby powder lawsuits.
